I was recently talking about bikes w/ some friends - all girls, and none of them really that into riding (yet). One of them said she always looks for mens bikes because the frame structure offers more support. She talked about the triangular shaped frame of a mens bike vs. the traditional shape of a womens frame. My previous bike happened to be a mens bike. I see plenty of women riding mens bikes. I never really gave it much thought before, but does it make a difference? (4)

I keep forgetting to post these books, and Meredith if you did, and I just missed, my apologizes! Cycling for Women by Bicycling Magazine. Give some really good basic hints. Talks about all sorts of different topics, including riding while pregnant or even on your period. That alone wins points in my book. Give some good easy equations on how to figure out what your calorie, protein intake should be. That was my favorite part of the book. The Female Cyclist (which I left downstairs, thus showing just how lazy I am that I am not going down to get....okay, fine, be right back.....) Okay back, panting, but back. I really hate walking Starting over: The Female Cyclist --Gearing up a level. by Gale Bernhardt. I haven't dove into this one yet, but it actually seems to step off where the Bicycling Magazine one stops. More in depth coverage of many of the same topics. It is my bus reading for this week, so I'll let you know. I just wanted to get these titles out there. Anyone else have books, sites info geared just for the women rider? Thanks, J (0)

An article from 1994 places transportation within the context of gender: http://www.transalt.org/press/magazine/942MarAprafp/06-7gender.html. What happened to this concept? I've searched and found few other published works on the topic. It had not occurred to me to think of a feminist transportation perspective before I stumbled upon it while doing thesis research. But women and men do use transportation systems differently and this is important to consider as we make our city plans. (0)

Here's a fascinating site devoted to a woman who cycled around the world -- in 1894! Also, as I'm reading about women & bikes, I'm coming to find out that they had a big impact on the women's suffrage movement. Freedom on a bike, freedom in society. Not to mention freedom from those god-awful outfits of the 1800s! (0)

Check this out from Bicycle magazine. Seems to claim that women are safer on the road than men because drivers go further around them. Check it. Oh, yeah. And I'm a boy. So there. http://womenonwheels.bicycling.com/2006/09/women_on_wheels_2.html (0)

Bike Columbus has a photo sketch that has been released of the Olentangy Bike Trail Attacker, who has gone after 3 women on the trail. Important info for all to be aware of! Not to slam on trails or discourage their use, but this is precisely why, as a woman, I prefer the roads...some places on the trail are so isolated that I feel quite vulnerable. I guess nowhere is entirely "safe", though... Does anyone know whether the trails have call boxes or other safety mechanisms? I guess just make sure you have your cell ready to go! (4)

All, I had this great idea this afternoon that it would be neat for all the Org ladies to have a meet and greet get together. I was thinking, Laura and Mere (admin to some of you) are my friends, but what about the rest of ya? Of course when I got home and signed in I realized Casey was kinda on the same brain wave (scary) but with all Considerers having a meet and greet. Now, I've got to meet a few of the ladies here and there at events such as Org meetings, MNR and the Doo Dah Parade (such as Anita and the crazy gal wearing the superman cape (lol), but I can't seem to always match your screen names with your real names. Plus I've been dieing to have conversation with Razzmatazz about Tour de France stuff and this whole doping thing that's killing our beloved sport. Not to mention finding out if any of you are into mountain biking as well. So whadda ya think Ladies? Wanna get together face to face for some girls only time? Carla Hix (10)

First off, couldn't find where else this would fit, just found a new website for women riders: www.spokegirl.com Looks like they are just getting started, but a neat idea. 2nd, it may seem a bit offensive and dividing to have a thread just for women, but when you realize most of us spend 85-95% of our day playing by men's rules, it can be nice to have own space. It doesn't mean you can't come by and peek and even ask questions or offer suggestions, but being a woman and an athlete offers its own special, um, viewpoints. But, I don't know this group well, or at all really, and maybe this thread isn't needed. Since I am here, what seats do the ladies use? I have a "hybrid" for more comfy riding and I have a big gel seat, I hate it. Other suggestions? Thanks, (4)

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article1695668.ece Hmmm...I do wonder about this. If you run red lights, you get out in front of cars who may be turning or perhaps just aren't paying attention. I think there is a balance between being a renegade and being a pussycat, though.... (3)
