Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition (COBAC) The Central Ohio Bicycle Advocacy Coalition was formed in 1991 by Central Ohio cyclists to establish a Bikeway Coordinator position and a Bikeway Advisory Committee for the City of Columbus. The group also advocated for the completion of the I-670 east–west Connector bike trail. Upon success with both these initiatives, COBAC went dormant for more than a decade until cycling advocate John Gideon revived it in 2003. COBAC went on to successfully advocate for many initiatives, including COTA’s Bike ‘n Bus, the OSU Bike Plan, Columbus’s Bicentennial Bikeways Plan, and Pedal Instead. Consider Biking In 2006, Columbus resident Meredith Joy sought a local cycling community to call her own and, being frustrated with her lack of options, created an online forum with software engineer Mike Reed. They launched considerbiking.org in April 2007 to target commuter cyclists and an impressive number of people were registered users of the site within several months. Merged This momentum of Consider Biking’s grassroots community caught the attention of the COBAC leadership and, in December 2007, they voted to bring its leadership on board. Thus the advocacy expertise of COBAC combined with the outreach expertise of Consider Biking to create a smarter, more powerful organization than would have been possible before the merger. The new organization, doing business as Consider Biking, was able to hire its first staff in March 2008—Executive Director Jeff Stephens—thanks to a generous grant from Columbus Outdoor Pursuits. We’re all very excited about the future of cycling in Columbus! (0)
