Ohio Green Living is the dream child of five Ohioans who have, each in their own way, worked as pioneers in the field of sustainable living within Ohio.

Tim and Margaret Chavez originated the solar stage at Comfest (Columbus, OH) as well as worked for a number of years as organizers for Susfest (Athens, OH). Tim maintains the website www.anythingsolar.com.

Richard Jensen of the Flying J Farm is an organic farmer, pilot and board member of OEFFA (Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association).

Jay and Annie Warmke own and run Blue Rock Station, a Green Living Center in Philo, OH. It features Ohio’s first Earthship, straw bale buildings, rare breed chickens, llamas and more. They also served as organizers of Susfest and have spoken on green living at numerous events across the nation.

After working independently on other projects they decided to join together to “grow” the green living movement within Ohio by offering learning opportunities that are fun, interesting and sometimes even adventurous.

Ohio Green Living serves as the umbrella for fairs, festivals, events or organizations that are working to promote and showcase green living to Ohioans.

The goal is to create or encourage events that focus on green living by providing workshops, demonstrations and music to teach sustainable living skills in a fun and entertaining atmosphere.

The Green Buckeye blog focuses on sustainability in Central Ohio. Tina Kreminski started the blog in November 2006 so that she could both learn more about what was happening around sustainability in this region, and so that she could share what she learned.

MORPC's Mission: To enhance the quality of life and competitive advantages of the region by working through local governments and other constituents.

The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) is a voluntary association of governments serving Ohio. A catalyst for regional change, evidence of MORPC's work is seen everyday through planning, programming and brokerage services in the areas of housing, transportation, water, land use, zoning, environmental and technology issues. We assist our 42 local governments by providing innovative solutions for the many challenges facing our growing region.

MORPC receives financial support from several sources including the federal government, the state of Ohio, public utility companies and city, township and county governments as well as membership dues. Members enjoy a substantial return on investment through assertive legislative representation, the flow of federal and state dollars through the region, training and educational forums, consulting services, grantsmanship, salary and benefit surveys and regional networking opportunities.

Central Ohio Relocalization Effort
Quote:
Relocalization is a strategy to build societies based on the local production of food, energy and goods, and the local development of currency, governance and culture. The main goals of Relocalization are to increase community energy security, to strengthen local economies, and to dramatically improve environmental conditions and social equity.

The Relocalization strategy developed in response to the environmental, social, political and economic impacts of global over-reliance on cheap energy. Our dependence on cheap non-renewable fossil fuel energy has produced climate change, the erosion of community, wars for oil-rich land and the instability of the global economic system.

The Relocalization Network helps Local Groups develop community activities and programs that can be used locally and as working models for other communities when the effects of energy decline become more intense.

Green Columbus
Quote:
Green Columbus is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainable living in Central Ohio and globally. Our strategies for fulfilling this promise are:

1) Providing forums – Green Columbus grew from of the success of Columbus Green Drinks and Earth Day 2007: A Year in a Day, the first city-wide Earth Day celebration in over a decade. Green Columbus will continue to organize Green Drinks, Earth Day and similar events, as well as explore new venues that encourage interaction among the environmentally conscious, to work together effectively to tackle the myriad environmental challenges in Central Ohio and elsewhere.

2) Raising awareness – The first step in solving a problem is acknowledging that one exists. Green Columbus will assist environmental advocates to communicate information regarding threats facing our natural resources. However, we will not stop there. Many of the environmental problems we face today can be solved with existing strategies. So, Green Columbus also intends to raise awareness about what can be done to address both local and global environmental challenges.

3) Encouraging action – It is not sufficient for us to get together and learn about environmental problems and solutions, we must also take action. On this front, Green Columbus will lead by example. Our intention is to be a ‘do tank’, opposed to a think tank, initiating and conducting programs that will have a positive impact on the natural environment in Central Ohio and serve as an example to others around the world.

Columbus Green Drinks
Quote:
The purpose of Green Drinks is primarily FUN, but the events also enable people to share new ideas; develop inspired solutions, discuss the state of the world, learn about opportunities to work for change and to make a difference...whatever you want it to be. So, come have a few drinks and meet/network with like-minded individuals who share your interest in building a sustainable society and planet.
