Cleveland Plain Dealer "Share the Road" article
Author: pkovacs :: Posted: Sat Jul 19, 2008 7:42 pm This set of articles appeared in last week's Cleveland Plain Dealer. http://centurycycles.com/page.cfm?PageID=710
This is what I wish the Dispatch would print, an article which includes the motorist rules of the road. Ann Fisher did include a list in her blog http://blog.dispatch.com/ann/ and I appreciate that. I like the graphics in the Plain Dealer article.

WooHoo, Daniel McKewen
Author: meredith :: Posted: Fri Jul 18, 2008 9:30 pm Alive Person to Watch, "Trendsetter"

Quote:
Daniel McKewen began his search for the perfect messenger bag — durable, functional, comfortable — six years ago. He's still looking.

He's since formed his own company on that premise, though. And as Seagull Bags' "czar," McKewen is, more than anything, in awe of how far it's come.

It's come all the way from his basement, where a friend taught him to use a sewing machine after he decided he could make better bags than the ones he'd found. It's come from word-of-mouth advertising and dragging friends in on the venture when he got in over his head with orders.

It's come to fully customizable, carefully revised bags still handmade in Columbus — from a new Clintonville storefront. It's come to international accounts, booming online sales and a staff of five.

And it's all because of his need to reach goals — and his staff, said McKewen, a Columbus native who graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design in 2006. "At this point, I can't really take credit for it," he said. "I'm just holding on. It's like that Wilson Phillips song, 'Hold on for one more day,' you know?"

Don't let that fool you into thinking he's relaxing at the top of the totem pole, though. McKewen has a hand in every one of the about 20 bags that roll out of the store each week — including sewing on their signature Ohio logo.

"I put on every strap, too. I'm really, really particular about how that goes on there," he said. "And I still do all the custom embroidery and everything."

Being in charge of what you do and when you do it is worth all the work, McKewen said. And he's been spreading that entrepreneurial spirit, like in the case of a friend who threw out the idea of painting bike frames and just launched Delicious Mixtures, which operates from the Seagull storefront.

"I've kind of been the one that's cracking the whip behind that, because I've been able to experience how awesome it is to have your own job and have creative license to do whatever you want," he said.

So what does McKewen want? Along with a bit more time to sleep, bike, skateboard and play guitar with band The Drowsy Lads, it hasn't changed.

"I really want to make the best messenger bags in the world," said McKewen, seeming relatively undaunted by the statement. "Probably won't happen. That's OK."

Way to represent, yo!

I nearly got hit by CPD Cruiser 355 yesterday 7:13pm
Author: Zach Henkel :: Posted: Thu Jul 17, 2008 10:57 am This map does not look to be working...

I was riding eastbound on W. 3rd Ave. toward the intersection with Perry St. July 16th at 7:13pm An eastbound CPD cruiser #355 swings up to the left of me passes and turns right onto Perry St southbound nearly making me run right into his rear quarterpanel/passenger door. I braked as it forced me right onto Perry St. He even looked back at me while he was pulling this manuever! I stopped in bewilderment and wondered if I should chase him down or just call it in. So I rode home and made the report to Internal Affairs. Look out for car 355!

This stuff happens regularly by everyday motorists, but I got really flustered when a law officer did this. Geez!

Toledo man shot bicycling to work
Author: Dan :: Posted: Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:11 am From Dispatch.com

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 8:45 AM

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Toledo police say a man was shot and killed while bicycling to work for the first time to save on gas.

Police Capt. Ray Carroll says 46-year-old David Babcock was seen on a street having a heated argument with another man before he was shot around 5:30 Tuesday morning. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The coroner says Babcock took a bullet to the face that caused massive bleeding and hampered his breathing.

No arrests have been made. Authorities don't know the motive for the shooting.

Babcock survived surgery to remove a brain tumor 13 years ago. His fiance, Rene Long, says Babcock had put lights on his bike and wore a reflective vest so he would be safe on his inaugural, 8-mile ride to his job at Fresh Products Inc., a maker of air fresheners.

Author: razzmatazz :: Posted: Thu Jul 10, 2008 12:09 pm Sorry if this is old news. Working doubles on Mondays has me totally fried, I can't keep up! Just too old for this.... lol (hush Justin....)

Anyhow, if it is new news, there is was a 24 hour bike race in Anchorage, AK where a 14 year old was attacked, in the middle of the night. She was hurt pretty damn bad, but seems to be recovering well.

There are tons of links, but I first read this one: http://www.adn.com/bearattacks/story/450061.html

Her family also set up a page off of the Children's Hospital that she is in:

click on patient info, or it might be patient page

type in "davis" and her password is "suggest-value"

Her name is Petra Davis, what a champ, eh?

CRANKSTERS ON WCRS
Author: Zach Henkel :: Posted: Mon Jul 07, 2008 12:02 pm I am begining my new season of Cranksters this week. And I am trying a new style of getting more diverse cyclists on the air as opposed to people I just hang out with that happen to be cyclists. I also want to do live radio more than the last season with all pre-recorded stuff. I would also like to maybe have a co-host.

Who is interested in coming on Cranksters and talking about biking on the radio? Anyone interested in being a co-host?

Need Suggestions for Urban Bike Rack Locations
Author: Walker :: Posted: Sat Jun 21, 2008 4:17 pm From here: http://www.columbusunderground.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14929

Mayor Coleman is seeking suggestions from urban enthusiasts here at Columbus Underground on what neighborhoods and specific areas are in need of additional bicycle parking solutions. These suggestions will help to shape the development of the Bicentennial Bike Plan. Advice is needed specifically for areas in and around Downtown, including the Short North, the University District, Brewery District, Near East Side, and Franklinton.

Please make your suggestions as specific as possible, and if you see a suggestion that someone else has made that you also like, be sure to post that you'd also like to see it as well. The ideas that get the most support will be most heavily considered for installation.

Roadside Assistance for Bikes
Author: Yethu :: Posted: Wed Jun 11, 2008 11:22 pm Yes, you call from anywhere when your bike breaks down and they send a tow truck to take you to home or where you can get help.

Well, almost anywhere, because they use the same call-center and towing network used by insurance companies.

Last week I had a flat at OSU about noon. They came in 20 minutes. Took me back home.

The driver took pictures of my recumbent on his flatbed....

To be balanced, I add that the only other time I tried was about 2 1/2 years ago when I lived in DC. I called from 3 blocks from the White House during a torrential rain. They said they were having trouble finding a truck that would come for me and it would take a long time. I took the subway home....

$40/year and you can cover your car and bike for a total of $71.

(+ $20 for each additional person covered.)

Moreover, they were set up specifically to provide an alternative to the AAA, which has a long history of lobbying for more highways and against safer cars.

They came promptly the 2 times my undersized Honda battery died.

Air Pollution
Author: Yethu :: Posted: Wed Jun 11, 2008 10:56 pm Biking can damage your health if the air is harmful.

Unfortunately, Columbus air is really bad (from AEP burning coal for electricity and from motor vehicles.)

You may be able to reduce your lung damage by:
When pollution is most damaging, stay indoors.
When you bike in pollution, don't exert yourself (that is, don't breath deeply.)
When you have a choice, cycle on streets with trees.
Stay way back from exhaust pipes, especially when you are stopped.

You can get a real-time measurement of pollution at:
http://airquality.morpc1.org/realtimedata.cfm

Use this map to find the closest monitoring site:
http://airquality.morpc1.org/sitemap.cfm
(Columbus Fairgrounds looks closest to OSU.)

I pay most attention to the small particulates, which cause asthma and serious lung damage. They are so small that no filter can remove them. The only way to avoid them is to go indoors. They are at high levels in Columbus year-round.

On the chart small particulates are called PM 2.5 .

The other major measured risk is ozone. This gets really bad in Columbus only in hot weather.

The colors on the chart for Levels of Concern are the result of political officials rejecting scientist's recommendations at EPA.

I use the World Health Organization standards.

For small particulates, WHO sets the level known to be damaging to human health at 25.

I ignore the colors and view levels above 25 with increasing concern.

(Details on converting the WHO 25 to the EPA AQI 25 on request....)

REPORTING DANGEROUS DRIVERS
Author: Zach Henkel :: Posted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:19 pm So I guess the 1-800-GRAB-DUI number does not work in the Columbus area after my girlfriend called it today to an SUV driver who harrased her!?

I called the Columbus Police Dept. just now and asked where to call in aggressive, threatening, and violent drivers on the road.

I really am feeling vigilante about this situation. I encourage you to start reporting these daily incidents, I think to police will notice after awhile.

CALL 614-645-4545 to report these incidents. Get as much info a you can about the driver and vehicle.
