Did you get doused by malathion on July 29th?
Author: Mister MooCow :: Posted: Sun Aug 10, 2008 11:38 pm
If you were riding the Olentangy Bike Trail around 6:30am on July 29th in the Clintonville area, you probably saw the truck "fogging" the area. If the idea of riding through malathion concerns you, please join us in discussing the issue with Dr. Teresa Long, the Columbus Health Commissioner.

Watch http://nospraycolumbus.com for details (or sign up to be notified when the meeting time/place is determined).

Oh, in case you missed the last fogging, they'll be doing the OSU/SN/VV area (including the area along the Olentangy) next week. Check out the map so you can plan accordingly.

Lost: Specialized Bike Lock
Author: TrekBiker :: Posted: Sat Aug 09, 2008 8:29 pm
Had it in my bike bag in a pouch on the back.. and now suddenly its gone.. likely popped out when I hit a bump or something. its a thick silver(plastic mesh covered) cable lock with black locking bit.

Possibly lost along the Olentangy Bike Path

if anyone finds it in their travels please let me know.

I'll probably buy a new one but I would like to find that one anyhow.

Short runs = big impression

I took my bike to the dentist after work today for my filling appointment. I took backroads because Lancaster is a bear this time of day and that made the trip just over 2 miles each way according to my GPS.

Most of you will agree that that's not a long trip but the folks at the dentist's office were impressed. I now know the workout routines of four new people! On the way back I got in front of a young gentlemen who thought he had lake pipes on his jeep (if you don't know what lake pipes are - ask your parents). We came up to a parked car and instead of keeping pace and going around the car I got on the brakes well back from the car and stood on my pedals to wave him through. At first he didn't understand and then he went by (without goosing the engine) and thanked me.

I wasn't in that much of a hurry with my numb jaw and all and got kind of a kick out of the whole thing.

My Band Geek-dom met my bike geek-dom last night
Author: SilverTurtle :: Posted: Thu Jul 31, 2008 12:24 pm
Actually, I don't consider myself a bike geek yet. But I've been a band geek forever. And so I went to the Drum Corp show last night . And the Blue Stars show this year is "La Tour - Every Second Counts". They are playing French music and have a BIKE theme for the show. Their guard wore jerseys + shorts, used bike tires as props, etc. They weren't my favorite of the night but it was a good show.

Google's GPS bike will likely make a visit to OSU's campus in the near future, scanning more street-views.

Attached is pic of their ride:

Tried To Buy A Bike Lately?
Author: njp :: Posted: Mon Jul 28, 2008 12:07 pm
I'd heard apochrypal news stories reportedly quoting bike shop owners as stating that bicycles sales were up substantially. ("Through the roof," in one case.) I took these with a serious grain of salt (washed down with dry lube) even though I had to wait more than a month for a recent purchase.

Well, yesterday, I did a little brick'n'mortar/on-line research for a friend who is thinking of trying the cycle commuter route and found, to my surprise, that when it comes to opening price road bikes, most of the big box guys are sold out. Target and Wal-Mart are quoting two-week out stock arrival on their web sites with no in-store stock. A quick visit to the local Dick's Sporting Goods turned up pretty much the same sort of thing--they don't sell road bikes but the adult recreational styles (other than pure mountain bikes) were shot.

Even allowing for the fact that a good many of these new bikes will eventually end up collecting dust in the garage, it still opens up, in the short term, a broader audience for biking concerns. Hopefully we can tap that.

Velorutionary Women
Author: gratitudejoy :: Posted: Mon Jul 21, 2008 4:32 am
Last night Shannon and I were gifted with the presence of the Women's Bike Ride.

We were inside the Clintonville food co-op when a group of women in bike helmets entered the store. Tracy, a cashier, asked me "Did you hear that music?"

Shannon and I walked out to load up our bikes and saw the sidewalk covered with bikes and sisters. Music filled the air, emitting from speakers in a bike trailer. A friendly woman ran up to us and asked us if we'd like to join the ride. She explained how democratically the ride was conducted.

We didn't join the ride, (due to our frozen fruit and other groceries)but it had an effect on us none the less.

It felt like those women were claiming space
for democracy
for women
for cooperation
for beauty and joy
for bikes

Hooray for the Women's Bike Ride! Viva la Velorution!

Shinozaki Mikoto is a student who's life is really routine. Going to school, going home, going to school, going home...nothing changes....until the day the girl he likes talks to him and introduces him to bicycling. His life now has a new meaning, and a bright path has shown itself to Shinozaki. Experiencing both failure and success throughout his training, he works hard to become the best cyclist in the world.

And, if old school is more your thang:
Quote:
"Shakariki!," the first manga series by artist Masahito Soda, is being adapted as a live-action film, starring members of the acting group D-BOYS. Serialized in Shonen Champion from 1992 to 1995, the comic focused on high schoolers involved in the sport of bicycle racing.

D-BOYS leader Yuya Endo stars as Teru, who is trying to revive his school's defunct bicycle club. Yuichi Nakamura ("Kamen Rider Den-O") plays the talented Poppo, and Hiroki Suzuki ("Juken Sentai Gekiranger") plays Yuta, a racer from a rival school. The three actors began practicing in December, and last week they underwent more intensive training that included cycling for 60km every day.

The rest of the cast includes Noriko Nakagoshi as Teru's sister Sayuri, Miho Nakai as one of the team's mothers, Akira Emoto as the school principal, Yoichi Nukumizu as vice principal, and Taizo Harada as the team's coach.

This is the first feature-length film helmed by Shinsuke Ono, who has worked as an assistant director on movies such as Takeshi Kitano's "Kids Return." Shooting begins on Thursday and is expected to take until the end of April. Showgate will distribute the movie in September.

rails-to-trail

So how do you get on the rails to trail path from columbus? I've driven to London and picked it up there, but doesn't it start sooner than that?

Want to go on a long ride this weekend, and trying to figure out how to get there.
