Newb here. I have definitely decided to consider biking, but I need to get a bike first. Sad I'm working on that.
My wife and I luckily work near the same area so we have been carpooling and becoming a one car family. I've enjoyed seeing more people on bikes and hope to join you all soon.

EMS Cyclists

Quote:
James Fish carefully weaves his large hands through the straps of Natalie Ratliff's blue bike helmet. He snaps the straps together and checks the space under.

Satisfied the fit is snug, he asks, “How does that feel?”

The 8-year-old girl nods and smiles.

Soon Fish, a medic with the Washington Township Fire Department, gets on his own bicycle and pedals off. He's one of 25 certified EMS bicycle patrols for the township, which serves the city of Dublin.

Other cities have them, including Westerville and Worthington.

Emergency medical service medics on bikes are able to weave through crowds and reach a victim quicker than a large ambulance, Fish said. The bikes carry 50 pounds of medical gear, including oxygen equipment, cardiac equipment and a basic first-aid kit. Paramedics can treat anything from an insect bite to a heart attack.

Long-time commuter New to the group, but riding to live
Author: subverita :: Posted: Thu Jun 12, 2008 1:36 pm
I've been commuting from Upper Arlington to Grove City (5years), and now to the West Edge area for the past 5 years. I'm excited about the timing of this organization and the fact that more people are going to resort to bicycling and public transportation then ever before. Sorry it's taking this form, but better than nothing. I am concerned about how crowded the Olentangy trail is going to be, and how poorly mannered so many riders are already.Teach a newbie to:

announce when passing others;
understand that the trail is called "multi-use" for a reason; and
that as a cyclist on the trail you must yield to everything else.

I have loved bicycling for so long. I am concerned that with the onslaught of so many new riders, their methods (like riding against traffic, or jamming up the sidewalks, or speeding along the trails as though no one else is entitled to use them) is going to create a lot of angst with the driving, walking and busing public.

Another Newbie Introduction Post

Hey everyone! I've been lurking around the forums for a couple weeks and thought it was probably time to join in all the fun.

I've ridden bikes very casually for the past few years - a bike trail here or there w/ friends and very rarely to work.

This spring I've decided to bike way more - I'm trying to be as car-lite as possible - including commuting to work, around town for errands, etc.

So, hello everyone!

Hello all

Found this forum when I was researching the Ride of Silence (had a great time - REALLY wierd, all those bikes and no sounds other than the animals and tires on the road - awesome!!!)

I got back into cycling a couple of years ago after about a 20 yr absence. Rode TOSRV the last 2 yrs, felt GREAT (by about Wendsday !!)

Wandered around some, great forum, good info, seem like some great folks!!

Looking forward to meeting you guys.

Ross

New here....well almost
Author: tipusnr :: Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 9:22 am
Hi! While I have been reading, and hopefully contributing, to this forum for a couple of weeks now I haven’t introduced myself. How rude of me! Shocked

My name in Bill and my wife, Andrea, and I live in Reynoldsburg off Reynoldsburg-New Albany Road. She is a K-5 music teacher and I work as an analyst for the wastewater treatment plant that you can see from I-71 (the one with the domes).

I’m not certain was type of bicyclists we are. We started a couple of years ago to fitness ride on many of the local trails but I have been riding off and on since the 60’s. I bought my current road bike in the early 80’s used off my ex-brother-in-law. We have a 2 bike rack on the Honda CRV my wife drives and intend to haul the bikes to Vermont this summer as transportation for our vacation there.

We are just starting to outfit the bikes with Blackburn racks and rear bags from the bike shop in Gahanna but backpacks are still our main storage for trips. I would like to do more riding in the area but I am having trouble finding safe ways out of Reynoldsburg as I am blocked by Broad Street to the north and I-70 to the south. I did just get a bike holder for my Garmin so maybe I can find a back way. (I think I’ll save that rant for another posting).

I’m working on the bikes (which are chain store specials) and getting ready to get the licenses, which I just found out yesterday, Reynoldsburg requires. They are only 50 cents each but the website doesn’t say where to get them or issuing hours. Well, I’d better get at it.

Enjoy! Very Happy

Hello Consider Biking
Author: NewDream :: Posted: Wed May 28, 2008 6:27 pm
New to Columbus and the forum! Just moved here from Philly with GratitudeJoy (Lauren). I've been keeping up with the forum, and now finally had the chance to post- yay! Thanks for all the info as we were beginning our exploration of C-bus and the cycling scene.

Thanks to the founders of this organization- I'm really looking forward to seeing/being a part of the growing awareness around cycling, sustainable urban transportation and the community building inherent in the whole endeavor.

Meetup?
Author: lifeontwowheels :: Posted: Wed May 21, 2008 9:34 pm
So Keith, Jen and I were wondering how much interest there is in having a fairly regular Consider Biking meet up?

Columbus Underground has a weekly breakfast meet up on Saturdays that is a lot of fun.

This would be a great way to further connect with the community, bring some of our discussions into real life and greater productivity and just have fun. We could start out with a once a month thing, somewhere fairly family friendly,as convenient as possible and ideally somewhere pretty bike friendly (a restaurant or coffee shop that really cater to cyclists. Tip Top and Cafe Brioso were the two that immediately came to mind).

Coreroc signing in to CB
Author: COREROC :: Posted: Thu May 15, 2008 11:45 am
Hello all I wanted to introduce myself to those here that don't know me. I go by coreroc in the art and music world, but by face I go by Ashley. I have been biking the better part of 25+ years. However I only consider myself an avid cyclist for about the last 15 years.

I ride mostly BMX at this point and can't get enough of it with weather permiting. I build all of my bikes from the ground up and wouldn't have it any other way. My setup involves a brakeless bike and freecoaster rear wheel. This of course is a bit dangerous on some levels, but the freedom on 2 wheels and need for more control to ride makes it worth every close call. I will include a few pics of my bike/riding for your enjoyment.

And super thanks to meredeth and all who help make CB such an awesome resource.

Greetings! New member here, been an on-and-off cyclist for 30+ years, commuted by bike when I lived in Akron, so I find Columbus blissfully flat. Am now presently in the most serious on phase of my life. Just rode the Chillicothe-Portsmouth leg of TOSRV.

1st Mon. night ride and Columbus newbie
Author: evan :: Posted: Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:36 am
Howdy all,

Last night was my first Mon. night ride, and I would like to thank everybody for a wonderful night. I'm fairly new to the city and the roads of last night's route were some of the best I've been on here. So are there any other rides besides Mon. night and C-Mass at the end of the month?

Anyways you're going to start seeing a lot more of me around so I thought I should introduce myself. I'm from the almost stix of CT (or the twigs as we decided to call it last night), and came here about 6 months ago for grad school. I've always ridden by myself, even this past winter in the city, so these group rides are a new experience. And I like it.

-Evan

p.s.- A big thankyou to considerbiking for connecting the cycling community of Columbus.

Getting back into cycling
Author: lifeontwowheels :: Posted: Sun Mar 16, 2008 9:49 pm
When I lived near campus 06-07 in an apartment, I decided to head over to Third Hand to find a decent bike to make going to and from class a little easier.

I loved riding around campus on my bike, until a knee injury sidelined me.

The apartment I have now is in a decidedly bike unfriendly area (33 and Petzenger) but I decided to head back to Third Hand to find something a little better suited to longer hauls. With the Alum Creek path now running right across the street from me, it opens up the ability to cycle to at least one job, only a mile and a half up the road. As my fitness builds up, I would like to try to get to and from CSCC by the middle of the quarter and, finally, start adding a few days a week by cycle to my other job down town.

I'm looking for an apartment near Victorian Village/South West Campus for the fall so I can be car free by September-October.

Glad to find some great resources here for Columbus area cycling. I've also started my own online journal to document my transition to car lite/car free.
