Biking takes a lot of energy. If you don't eat the right foods, you might get into all kinds of trouble. This is a place to talk about food, nutrition, etc. What foods keep you going? Do you eat a big breakfast or snack throughout the day? Have you found a super-food? Props to Hail Seitan for the idea!

Just wondering; are there any fellow diabetics on the list? I started riding seriously a couple years ago, and I am finding it a challenge to get good information on controlling blood sugar on long rides. My doc's eyes glaze over when I ask her what I should do when I'm in mile 30 of a 50 mile ride and my blood sugar is out of whack. They all tell you that you should exercise, but I'm finding their idea of exercise is 20 minutes on a treadmill. How boring is that? If you're out there, holla back. (6)

According to a July 14th WebMD article, "Chalk up another benefit of being physically fit, this time for people who have early Alzheimer's disease. A new study links cardiorespiratory fitness to less brain shrinkage in people with early Alzheimer's disease. Researcher Jeffrey M. Burns, MD, says in a news release that Alzheimer's patients were also compared to those who did not have the disease. "'People with early Alzheimer's disease who were less physically fit had four times more brain shrinkage when compared to normal older adults than those who were more physically fit, suggesting less brain shrinkage related to the Alzheimer's disease process in those with higher fitness levels,' the researchers write. Researchers tested 121 people aged 60 or older. Fifty-seven of those had early stages of Alzheimer's disease; 64 others had no dementia..." I love them, I hate them. I have a 24-speed (yes, that is too many speeds) and I've steadily gone from riding in third, to second, and now in first gear all the time. I was a gear-grinder or whatever, and my knees did not like that. Apparently it's never supposed to feel like a strain to bike? OK, I get that, but then I'm in first gear having to shift all the time b/c I get going too fast and can't keep my feet on the pedals. I was going to get shoes & clips to be more efficient with my stroke but I'm afraid I'll kill myself at intersections. I have special exercises I'm supposed to do to strengthen my knees but then I don't do them like I should. Ack! But yeah, am I missing something here?!? (14)

I don't understand how Bike Porn promotes the mission and values of Consider Biking http://www.considerbiking.org/site/about.php I hoped we would collectively ignore this guy. What do others think? (20)

Greetings bikers of Columbus, from the blistery Pacific Northwest!
I plan to visit your city in mid March with a program of bicycle videos. These films were created by various artists from the west coast and are different interpretations on the theme of "bike porn" The results are pretty exciting, all we need is the right venue. That is where you can help me. I have never been to Columbus before. Got any suggestions? Thanks in advance, revphil bicycle pornographer http://bikeporntour.blogspot.com (4)

I just got my bloodwork back. I've only been biking seriously for 5 months now, the numbers on my chart are way too fucking cool! I'm not real big with hanging onto my weight numbers, it doesn't tell the whole story, but I have dropped 40#. The inches are what one really notices. I refuse to buy new clothes til this spring after I have lost more weight. Only 30 more to go!! lol Anyhow: last years results HDL: (>40) 34 (this has always been low, only thing I was told that could bring it up, fish. Yea, not want a vege wants to hear!!) LDL(<130) 86 Triglycerides (<150) (this is the major important one) 238 (That is NOT a typo!! This year: HDL: 47!!! (and no fish!!) LDL: 97 (wonder how come it went up?) but, drumroll please.... Trig's: 119! No doubt, over a 100 points difference! I'm not a crazy biker, nor am I eating quite right, so get that in line and my health should really become more balanced!! I am so excited! I'm about to get a t-shirt with 119 printed on it! lol I know, I need help, but this is something I've been struggling with all my life. I don't want to be thin, I just want to be healthy. That is my only goal. (4)

While I was home for break I made the mistake of telling my parents I rode without a helmet and it made them a little uneasy. My Dad says my health insurance doesn't cover me on the roads (something like that) and car insurance doesn't cover me on a bike. Given that Ohio is an at-fault state with regards to insurance it would financially ruin me if I fucked up and got seriously injured on the roads. Does anyone know of any bicycle specific insurance available? (12)
