Author: knottj :: Posted: Fri Aug 01, 2008 2:02 pm
I just finished biking across the state of New York along the Erie Canalway Trail. I made a video about it and I thought some people here might appreciate it. It's 3 short 6 minute videos. Check it out...

Zig Zag Show
Quote:
“ZigZag: Real Stories, New Angles” tells the story of how people get from point A to point B, and explores how transportation choices affect our families, neighborhoods and communities.

This is a Portland-based show but I think it's an interesting idea. I'd love to have someone do something like this locally!

Cyclist Photo Project.... Still Looking
Author: gphoto :: Posted: Thu May 08, 2008 2:02 pm
for people to make the arduous journey to the dangerous corner of German Village to get their picture taken. You can ask the folks who've already done so, it's not that terrible. The free PBR offer still stands. Bring a friend, kids, mothers, aunts or anyone else you can think of.

Don't make me start using models....

Drop me a line at gclement@solophotography.com

This is crazy. I did not know such a software program existed -- a program for modeling bike frames to do modified bike projects. Woah.

New film: Caravan Prague
Author: meredith :: Posted: Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:06 am
A new film: Caravan Prague

Quote:
A bicycle caravan -- with the theme, "Money or Life" -- travels 500 miles across Europe to join protests in Prague against the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. The goal is to create a mobile utopian community which will be a living counter-example to the values of these powerful financial institutions. The landscape is beautiful, and bicycles possess their own poetry. But it's not always easy functioning without money. The authorities have their own ideas about policing the intersection of utopia and everyday life. And should the caravan succeed in getting to Prague, there's the matter of shutting down the World Bank/IMF meeting...

Caravan/Prague, a feature-length documentary, is a first-hand account of this journey and the historic 2000 Prague protests. Filmmaker Zack Winestine rode the entire trip with the caravan, filming from his bicycle as events unfolded. He recounts his hopes, fears, and questions, conveying the experience of participating in a community trying to bring about change that is both visionary and concrete.

Lone Twin showing @ Wexner Center

Wexner Performance Space

“You long to travel with them and join their world.”—Kronen Zeitung (Austria)

Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters of Lone Twin employ economical means to lure into you into loveably loopy narratives of their travels and travails. The engagingly off-the-wall British performance duo typically combine offhand conceptual brilliance with warmth and wit in left-of-center pieces concocted from their experiences. On the surface, this charming and deftly pieced together show documents their activities over their first near-decade working together (no conventional markers for these guys, thank you). But soon you’ll pick up on subtler signals too. A strange magic takes over, lending a glow to small coincidences, seemingly happenstance events, and extra-ordinary—extraordinary—moments that pull at your heartstrings.

Bike Culture
Author: meredith :: Posted: Fri Feb 08, 2008 10:38 pm
Wikipedia has an interesting summary of the phrase "bike culture". It leaves me wondering, what do we want bike culture to look like in Columbus???

Quote:
Bike culture is a set of art, music, and community events offered by passionate bicyclists seeking to inspire beginners, rally the faithful, and express their love of bicycling as a life choice.

Those who have made bicycling a lifestyle choice, not a mere recreational habit, often see see bicycling as a movement they want to help grow. There are several paths people use to convince others to try biking: Practical improvements, Logic and Facts, and Bike Culture.

Practical Improvements include measures at the level of local government, such as bike lanes, improved parking facilities, and access to public transportation, as a well as products that improve the bicycling experience, such as flat-resistant tires and simple, effective safety products. These techniques help address the common objections to bicycling: "I don't feel safe", "my tires are flat", "what if my bike gets stolen?"

The path of Logic and Facts seeks to convince and ground the decision to ride bikes at the logic level. Examples of Facts include: "Bicycling helps you integrate exercise into your daily life, which is something you need anyway," "Bicycling is an important way to reduce your personal impact on Global Warming," and "Bicycling makes our cities more liveable by reducing traffic and improving community interactions." The path of Logic and Facts provides a logical basis for bicycling.

Bike Culture contributors use their efforts to access the emotions that are at the heart of decision-making. Recognizing that bicycling for transportation represents a significant departure from a more established automobile-centered how-to-live archetype, and therefore requires a strong emotional basis, Bike Culture artists, musicians, and organizers seeks to use their offerings and events to embolden these emotions, and push people farther along in their own personal transformations. Through music, art, and shared group experiences such as rides and events, bike culture aims to hit the emotions that can bring us the point of making changes in our daily habits and lives.
