Volunteers Needed!

MORPC Pedestrian and Bicycle Traffic Counts – Wednesday, September 22, 2010 (See below for full project description).

First of all, many thanks to everyone who has volunteered for this project in the past. A report from the May 2010 count can be downloaded from:http://www.morpc.org/transportation/bicycle_pedestrian/project.asp

Wednesday September 22 is the next count date. As usual, we will be conducting two 2-hour counts:

Morning Count: 7 a.m. – 9 a.m.

Midday Count:   11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

You can volunteer to help with either or both counts. No special skills are required for participation. Volunteers record numbers of pedestrians and bicyclist on paper forms in 15-minute increments.

Count locations are available across Franklin County and we will try to match you to the location of your convenience. Please e-mail or call with your location preference:

Project Description:

To better understand pedestrian and bicycle traffic trends in the region, and to address the lack of consistent data about these modes of travel, MORPC has partnered with the Institute of Transportation Engineers in conducting ongoing pedestrian and bicycle counts in the region. With the help of volunteers like you, we are continuing our participation in the pedestrian and bicycle traffic count program. This is part of a national effort. Similar counts have been performed in many different communities nationwide. (More information is available at www.bikepeddocumentation.org/.) While various automatic counting technologies exist, manual counting is still the source of the most detailed data.

Please feel free to forward this message to anyone you know who might be interested in volunteering.

Also please note: Because of the need for more comprehensive data collection throughout the region, we’re encouraging local municipalities and communities to organize their own data collection efforts. In May 2010, the cities of Dublin, Pickerington, Westerville, and the  neighborhood of Olde Towne East all organized their own counting efforts with great success. If you would like assistance in organizing your own local counting effort, please contact me.

To volunteer, please contact Ariel Godwin, Associate Planner with Active Transportation & Safety Programs from Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission at (614) 233-4123 or agodwin@morpc.org.
