The Columbus Department of Recreation and Parks began talking with Metro Parks more than a year ago when a team, looking at ways to cut expenses, recommended a partnership. The economic advisory committee, which was appointed by Mayor Michael B. Coleman and the City Council, was the same group that recommended the Columbus income-tax increase that voters approved in August.

Recreation and Parks Director Alan D. McKnight estimated the switch will save Columbus about $150,000 a year and benefit all who use the trails.

“We’ve already partnered on building some of the trails,” McKnight said. “So it made sense to take this relationship a step further and have one entity ensure that all of the trails are kept trimmed, cleaned of debris and repaired whenever necessary.”

Jody Dzuranin, the operations manager for Consider Biking, said she thinks consistent maintenance along all trails will be good for bikers.

She also hopes it will spur new efforts to create volunteer groups to monitor trails and help make sure they’re safe.

“We want to be part of positive change,” Dzuranin said.

Campaigns — big and small, short and long — are the lifeblood of every advocacy organization.

Campaigns effect change, whether in policy or culture or in the built environment (bike plans and bike lanes).

Campaigns mobilize grass roots cyclists to get involved, making an organization politically powerful.

Campaigns help raise the profile of your organization in your community.

Campaigns get people to become members and to contribute to your organization.

We all need to learn how to run campaigns more effectively.

For more info about the training read the description on the Alliance website here: http://peoplepoweredmovement.org/site/index.php/site/memberservices/winning_campaigns_training

When: Friday, Saturday, Sunday August 6, 7 and 8: Friday 1:00 to 5:00 pm; Saturday 9:30 to 5:00 pm; Sunday 12:30 to 4:30 pm.

Where: Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Downtown Columbus on the banks of the Scioto River (see the fabulous Scioto Mile taking shape): COSI is currently the home of the Titanic exhibit!

How: The registration fee is only $75 (for Alliance members who register early through July 6th) for the entire weekend (some scholarships will be available: stay tuned for more information about that). There is a wide range of hotels within a few blocks of COSI. But we will make every attempt to provide home stays for everyone who asks for a home stay. Food will be provided during training. And we will be seeing the sights of Columbus Friday and Saturday evening, including the Short North Gallery Hop Saturday evening.
