Barbour Memorial Ride & Ghost Bike

Aug 25th, 2009 | By | Category: News

On Sunday, August 23, 2009, some of Steve Barbour’s close friends organized a ride to memorialize Steve and place a "ghost bike" in his honor. Several hundred bicyclists turned out to make a short, police-escorted, trek to the site of the crash.

Friends shared personal stories of Steve’s riding exploits, both as a gracious ride leader that nurtured new riders along…and, of his more devious methods to seek out the challenging hills in our region. Consider Biking’s Jeff Stephens, held the new Columbus Bike Usability Map high, and indicated that Steve had contributed a number of hours providing feedback on bike suitability on the roads he used so frequently. "When you use this map, you’ll be holding a little piece of Steve. He’ll still be contributing as a ride leader through this map."

In an emotional gesture, Steve’s mother and sister placed a "ghost bike" by the road where Steve was struck. We hope that motorists will take notice of the stark reminder, and maintain vigilance on the roads around cyclists.

After the prayers, comments and placement of the ghost bike, the majority of the riders made the standard trip out to the Dutch Kitchen for a reception hosted by Steve’s family. Steve was a regular at the "DK" and this served as a stimulus for many to share fond, joyful memories of our time with Steve. All in all, the morning’s festivities served as a very therapeutic means to help ease the tragic loss of a great leader in the cycling community.

First and foremost, we’d like to express our condolences to Steve’s family, Secondly, we’d like to thank Gail Falkinburg and friends for coordinating this event. Lastly, we’d like to again, thank the cycling community for responding to this tragedy with dignity and professionalism.  Steve would be proud of us.
