3-Foot Passing Bill Introduced

Sep 29th, 2009 | By Jeff Stephens | Category: News

Ohio is on its way to to joining 15 other states that have a three-foot passing law.

Senator Teresa Fedor of Toledo introduced Ohio Senate Bill 174 on Monday, September 28.  It looks like we’ve found a much-needed champion for cycling-specific causes in the Statehouse. Hurray!

And, we’re cautiously optimistic on the chances for passage of this legislation, due to the "bike-partisan" co-sponsorship of 17 other Senators! Many of these co-sponsoring Senators sit on the Transportation Committee, where this bill will need to gain momentum.

We’d like to thank the Ohio Bike Federation for driving this cause forward.  Consider Biking focuses on the many legislative bodies, throughout all the local municipalities, in central Ohio. However, we need to accomplish so much at the state and Federal levels, to give our local efforts "teeth." So, we’re grateful, and supportive, of this progressive statewide effort.

A handful of Consider Biking members joined members of the Ohio Bike Federation and a few other interested cyclists at a blustery press conference. We then joined Senator Fedor for lunch and wonderful discussions about our local accomplishments, and needed next steps at the state level.

Stay tuned for alerts regarding the Transportation Committee testimony.  A show of support (both via e-mails and in-person) from our cycling community will send a powerful message. Let’s get ready to act!

Thanks again to Senator Fedor!
