3-Foot Passing Bill – 1st hearing
Dec 8th, 2009 | By Jeff Stephens | Category: Advocacy
Ohio’s proposed “3-foot passing” legislation will be introduced to the Highways & Transportation Committee on Wed., Dec 9 at 10:00 am. This is the first step in the legislative process where a bill is introduced to Committee, and two sponsoring Senators will “testify” in support of the bill. (They’ll each give a 10+ minute speech) That will be it for tomorrow; there will be no public testimony.
Then….the Committee will have a few more hearings down the line…where they’ll entertain “proponent” and “opponent” testimony from individuals/organizations/etc.
We’ll be in attendance at the Committee meeting, and will report back to our bicycling constituency, and also, answer any questions about the process.

Hi. As President of the Sharon Heights Community Association I have been working with the northern Clintonville Community and the City of Columbus about repaving/redoing a section of Indianola Ave from Morse Road to Lincoln Ave. I know that the section of road is highly traveled by walkers and cyclist, and I believe is supposed to be included in the city bike plan, but it appears that because the City of Columbus chose to use Federal Stimulus dollars that they do not have to do anything except repave the current street as it is. ANy help or insights into how to better work with the city of Columbus would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith Beveridge
hi jeff, did the two senators have anything of note to say in their speeches? do you have a sense of where any of the police organizations might be with this legislation? my recollection is that colorado’s (3 foot) legislation was not received well by law enforcement, particularly the boulder police chief. thanks for your work. happy new year!
Keith,
Yeh…I ride that stretch of Indianola frequently. The PLAN calls for widened shoulder…but, during Phase #3 (after 2018). Uhhhgggg. We are helping the CIty request significant funding to implement the PLAN sooner…stay tuned for news. In the meantime, I’ll see/ask our engineers about this specific project later this week.
Frank,
The sponsoring Senators gave good testimony. We also know that the majority of the Transportation Committee has signed on as co-sponsor…(for a total of 19 co-sponsoring Senators, I think)…so, the bill should make it out of Committee, and have a good shot on the floor. Of course, the House, remains another challenge. No clue on reception from State Law enforcement…will try to find out and report back.
